In Pictures: Cakes at Pastelería Ideal

Pastelería Ideal is a bakery in the centro historico, which I tend to find, often by accident, while wandering through the cobbled streets near the zócalo. It’s also one of my favorite places to go for pastries and little baked goods, as well as to ogle at the sheer size of the place (see more in this past post). Last week, I took a trip to the less chaotic second floor, which houses a maze of cakes for weddings and birthdays. In a strange sense, the collection of cakes, itself, is a museum of art bizarre, with bright colors, sugar-coated caricatures, and towering monuments to the art of trying to impress one’s friends.
